Everyday, the number of people connected to and participating on the Internet is increasing at a rapid rate. Online, we are navigating through a web of connected machines sending and receiving information in plain sight. A curious listener can listen on the line and analyze the chatter. Protection is gained by secret codes. Information security knowledge and habits are fundamental to protecting one's identity and digital assets.

CryptoCamp is a Spring Break Camp for children ages 9 - 15 to begin practicing digital citizenry and security. The practice will include creating secure passphrases to remember, identifying misleading information, connecting to virtual servers securely, encrypting information and sharing it with identified parties, and trading cryptocurrencies for physical and digital assets.

FAQS

Do students need prior experience for CryptoCamp?

Experience using a computer with keyboard and mouse is required. The camp is geared for a 5th grade level.

Do students need to be good at math or have an interest in science?

The camp will feature more mathematics and logic puzzles than what is usual for our camps. Students should be comfortable with addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, and word problems.

How are students supervised?

The camp will have two full-time instructors and two assistants with a maximum of 25 students. Instructors are trained in safety procedures including CPR, injury, or allergic reaction protocols, and always have a copy of the camper's emergency contacts with them. Additionally, all students are expected to abide by the Camper Code of Conduct.

Will there be Minecraft?

The camp curriculum will not use Minecraft as a teaching tool. There will be a world setup for campers to play on during break if they choose to do so.

What is Encryption / Cryptography?

The process of converting information or data into a code, especially to prevent unauthorized access.

What is a Cryptocurrency?

A cryptocurrency (or crypto currency) is a digital asset designed to work as a medium of exchange using cryptography to secure the transactions and to control the creation of additional units of the currency.

Do I need to worry about my kid becoming a hacker?

The camp curriculum is made to teach students about computer systems, cryptography, and privacy. We do not condone the exploitation of computer systems for personal or financial gain. The goal is to leave the camp with a better understanding of how computers function, knowledge of tools for protecting information, and how digital economies work with cryptocurrencies.
